Cute Nicknames
There is something endearing about a name that just brings positive feelings of affection. Babies always have very cute nicknames. It’s like they’re all blessed collectively with being sweet and looking angelic from Day 1.Baby Boo, Angel Face, Honey Cakes, Lovey Love, Kitten and Buttercup, to just name a few.
But babies do not have a monopoly on this. Cute nicknames are also being adopted affectionately by people in relationships, or those desperately trying to be in one. Go to the dating sites, and you’ll see cute nicknames with avatars to match. How many times have we been winked by rainbow drops, miss blue eyes, tiffany girl, diamond, queenie, sparkle and sugar lips?
Cute nicknames serve a function. They help convey happiness and a sense of wonderment. When we adopt cute nicknames for ourselves or for our loved ones, we let them know how much we care about them and how much happiness they bring into our lives.
When you start using cute nicknames for your boyfriends, you’ve reached a special place reserved for the serious and the committed. Because cute nicknames are like showers of affection. Every time you say it, there is warmth and love. Well, that’s what sociologists will say anyway, when they start deconstructing our society and our mores.
From my observation of some friends, I realized that the more serious they are in their relationships, the more affectionate and cute nicknames come into play. None of my friends in long term relationships have given their boyfriends nicknames such as, stud muffin, gorgeous abs, rocco roccoco nor beefcake. Rather, we are now in the hero, Superman, honey bunch and darling category. This is because cute nicknames like these, convey mutual affection and most importantly, permanence.
I mean if you want your girlfriends to know what a great date night it was, then you can start calling John, beefcakes. But if you want them to know that you will soon meet his parents and that you know when his mom’s birthday is, then you can start throwing around cute nicknames, like, darling, sweetheart or sweetie pie.
Cute nicknames also make us look at the person in a more positive way. Just imagine a big, gruff man being called honey bunch by his girlfriend. Suddenly, he no longer is hulking and brooding large before us, but rather, he has been humanized and tenderized.
Some boyfriends adamantly resist being given cute nicknames.I’ve known women whose persistence are legendary. My friend Diana, for the longest could not call her boyfriend, Steve, anything else but Steve. Then suddenly, one day, we were amazed when she started calling him, darling without a word of protest from him! This guy, who resisted for more than two years, suddenly was being called one of the most affectionate of cute nicknames. A week later, we knew why. The wedding invitations were in the mail!
