Nicknames for Boyfriends

Would you date somebody whose name conjures up a character in one of those horror movies you loved when you were younger? Would you be able to talk to a cute guy if his name makes you laugh hysterically because it reminds you of your old neighbor who got chased by your dog?

Well, if names bring back memories of things we’d rather forget, then it’s time to get nicknames for boyfriends! This is the cool part, we can always replace our boyfriend’s name with a cool one. Try to choose something really unique that best describes him, whether it’s his blue eyes, cool hands or big feet you want to sing ode to.

A lot of girls, especially when they get possessive with their guys, give their boyfriend nicknames. It’s a primitive form of ownership. It is in a way, love branding, when you give him a nickname. These boyfriend nicknames may range from the hip, (Beck-a-blue), to the traditional, (Hank-is-mine), to the rocker/rapper hip, (Blinging Baby!)

Nicknames for boyfriends tend to have deeper meaning than just words strung together. They show love, they show affection, and they also show possession. Girls tend to get very territorial with their boyfriends, and nicknames for boyfriends do not escape this.

How else would you explain, “hunky mine” or “my smooches?” Nicknames for boyfriends usually evolve with the relationship. The longer you are together, the more comfortable you are with calling each other special names. Sometimes, one nickname is not enough! So you give your boyfriend nicknames that you use depending on the mood and situation. When you’re out with friends, he may be, Cool Luke, but when you’re alone with him, and the mood is right, Cool Luke suddenly becomes, Lover Boy!

On the other hand, when you’re with his family, you tend to use his given name out of respect to his parents. They, after all, named him. Very seldom would a girlfriend use Jakey for Jake, especially if his father tells you during that first visit that, “Jake was named after his Grandpa. He looks like my old man.” I am sure, Jakey, will not fly with Papa Jake!

Sometimes you have to be careful with creating nicknames for boyfriends. You do not want to use the same one for every boyfriend you’ve got. Your friends need to know that it’s Phil you were with last night and not Jude. On the other hand, having one, generic boyfriend nickname, like sweetheart protects you from making a major mistake if you indeed are dating Phil and Jude at the same time. Sweetheart this and sweetheart that will never be a problem!

Giving our boyfriend nicknames is very endearing. Just make sure that the nickname we pick, suits him. That it conjures up a positive image of him and that the boyfriend likes being called it. There’s nothing worse than seeing your boyfriend cringe every time you call him, my Superman. It’s nothing personal. He probably just wants to be called, Batman. So you know what you can do to show him that you really love him? Yes, you got that right, from now on, he’s going to be, my Batman!

So… what nicknames do you have for your boyfriend? No X-rated ones, please. Share your favorite boyfriend nicknames and the backstory, too. Just post under comments.
